Maine Coastal Islands National Wildife Refuge Details
The Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge is made up of over 50 islands spanning approximately 8,100 acres. The complex contains five wildlife refuges, which are Franklin Island, Pond Island, Seal Island, Cross Island, and Petit Manan Island. The refuge is primarily tasked with providing a habitat for nesting seabirds to flourish. To date, the efforts have resulted in several species returning to the refuge to nest after having been absent for many years. Laughing gulls, herring, Leach's storm-petrels, and greater black backed gulls are all present on the refuge. Visitation to the various refuges varies dependent upon season, as do the activities available at each.
