Located near Machiasport, Maine, Cross Island National Wildlife Refuge is situated on 1,700 acres and is one of five refuges in the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge system. With inlets, bays, and high sea cliffs, Cross Island hosts songbirds, raptors, and white-tailed deer along with many other species. Livid sedge and coast bite goosefoot, both of which are listed as state threatened species of plant life, help create a very rare plant life community. Shorebirds can be observed feeding on invertebrates in the mud flats and salt marshes as they prepare for their migration. Kayaking near the island is one of the more popular activities around the refuge.
