Giant Geyser Details

Giant Geyser is without question one of the greatest geysers in the world. This geyser truly deserves its name. First, look at the sheer size of its cone, a tribute to not only its powerful eruptions, but also to its age. This geyser has obviously been around for a long time, perhaps thousands of years! Second, Giant is a very tall geyser, with eruptions reaching a height of 150 to 200 feet. Perhaps the most amazing aspect of a Giant eruption is its duration, which can be close to one hour! It is estimated that during an eruption over one million gallons of water will be discharged! Unfortunately, Giant is completely unpredictable. It has often been said that in order to view a major geyser that is unpredictable, such as Giant, you have to either invest a great deal of time or just be lucky. I have been very lucky to see Giant erupt several times. Once it erupted right after the park had opened for the season in April, and I was the only person in the basin to witness it. I watched it erupt for 45 minutes, and it's an experience that I will never forget. But even if you don't see an eruption of Giant, a visit is well worth it, given the size of its massive cone, and the fact that Giant is always in a state of constant boil.
