Following the western riverbank, the Passagassawakeag Rail Trail is the site of a former railroad bed. The last of the old spikes were pulled between 2014 and 2016 when the path was laid with gravel and made open for recreation. The 2.2-mile trail is relatively flat as it used to be a railroad track and is popular for bikers and walkers. The river has a long history of use in the town of Belfast, though most interesting may be the name of the river. Given by the natives, it refers to the particular abundance of nighttime sturgeon spearfishing.
