Hawkes Property Details

Opened in 1832, the Cumberland and Oxford Canals were a major project and industrial mechanism in Maine's history. Stretching across the state's large southern lakes to reach Portland Maine's seaport, the canal, unfortunately, fell into disuse once the railroad came in. The Hawkes Preserve not only takes visitors through a mile-long easy path along the beautiful Presumpscot River but also through large and shady hemlock trees that follow along educating visitors about this canal's historic towpath.
