Somes Sound Details
Once considered a fjord, the Somes Sound now takes the status of a unique geological feature uncommon in the United States, a fjard. Originating from the same word and glacial construction, fjards differ in that they have a distinct "filling" of eroded materials over time, making them shallower and consisting of areas with salt marshes and mudflats. The sound makes up most of what is Acadia National Park's sweeping watered landscape, with depths reaching no deeper than up to 175 feet. The protected area is well sheltered from harsh weather, making this a long-standing boater's haven.
