Ripogenus Gorge Details

Though now altered due to years of use by the lumber industries, the Ripogenus Gorge is still an impressively carved natural canyon. Formed as the West Branch of the Penobscot River ran over the Caribou Lake anticline, or ridge, the river here is a series of rough rapids and walled scenery standing 240 feet high. Since the largest privately funded dam was built here in 1916, the river has also been used for its hydroelectric power generation.
