Northwest Basin Details

Northwest Basin Trail is a less populated loop hike in Baxter State Park of approximately 20 miles. Known for the rugged terrain and remoteness of the area, the basin is about as isolated as Maine visitors are going to find. Only recommended for hikers well versed in long-distance trips, the loop covers mountain summits, both Cowles and Davis Ponds, the headwaters of the Wassataquoik Stream, a plateau, and the popular Hamlin Peak. Hikers are warned to bring bug spray as the black flies will be the most prominent accompaniment along the way to views of Mt. Katahdin.
