Bordering several coastal towns and cities and the confluence of six different rivers, Merrymeeting Bay is an unusual place in terms of geography and biology. Though commonly referred to as a bay, the water is still mainly fresh, making it both a "tidal riverine" and an "inland delta." The name is of unknown origin, though one theory gives rise to the idea that "merry meetings" or festivities were often held here. Interestingly, these were often associated with the popular figure "Robin Hood."
