Matinicus Rock Light Details
Matinicus Rock Lighthouse, a 32-acre island used as a light station to warn boats of oncoming danger since 1827. The rocky island is well-known for its isolated location, with only the bravest of lightkeepers taking the position as the storms were known to be brutal. Abbie Burgess was one such figure who became famous after weathering a treacherous winter storm that rolled in immediately after her father left her to tend the light. The island and lighthouse flooded, and their home was washed away. Abbie kept the light burning, saved her family, and continued for years as a famous lighthouse keeper.
