Few places create their own natural coolers like the Ice Caves of the Nature Conservancy's Debsconeag Lake Wilderness Area. Made of large boulder deposits left behind when the glaciers retreated, the temperature between the rocks here never seems to warm up quite enough to melt the innards of the cave. Visitors here can take the cave trail to descend down into deep and narrow caverns to gaze upon walls of magical sparkling icicles. Iron rungs have been placed along the way to avoid any falls but, because the ice does tend to melt near the entrance, cleats are recommended.
