One of the largest wetlands in Maine, and the biggest in the region at over 7,000 acres, The Great Heath is well-known for its unique and diverse ecology, and the research opportunities it provides. The region here is rare in that it contains a wide variety of peatland types, including elevated masses known as raised bogs. Due to the impact of humans, very few of these exist anymore that can still support life, making The Great Heath an extremely unique natural wonder.
