Desert of Maine Details
The Desert of Maine is the product of poor human conservation efforts and the strong will of nature. Originally a farmstead owned by the Tuttle family back in 1797, the 40 acres of land were once rich glacial deposits protected by forests, unfortunately, the area was continuously cleared for the planting of potatoes and grazing. Today, crop rotation is common practice to ensure nutrients continue to thrive and regenerate the soil, the Desert of Maine is a prime example of why. After abandoning the useless land years later, it eventually became the tourist attraction it is today in 1925.
