Damariscotta Reversing Falls Details

Though not the largest in the state, Damariscotta Reversing Falls are still a rare sight to behold. Reversing falls or tidal falls, in general, are an unusual phenomenon that occurs when tidal waters are pushed through narrow channels. When the waterway is shallow enough or with enough of a geographical interruption, the flowing waters will fall one way when the tide goes in and another when it recedes. Damariscotta Falls are unique as they occur when the tidal waters force themselves back up the river, and visitors can easily observe the water and the unique atmosphere the phenomenon creates.
