Baxter Peak Details
Mount Katahdin, the tallest peak in the state of Maine, rises 5,268 feet above Baxter State Park as a monument to the wild nature of Maine's rugged north woods. The mountain and surrounding park were designated as a nature preserve almost a century ago and now encompass over 200,000 acres. The word Katahdin comes from a native language meaning "Greatest Mountain" and indeed stands up to the name with not one, but two peaks. Baxter Peak is the tallest of the two, making it the tallest point in the state.
