Smelt Brook Preserve Details
The York River Estuary region is one of the best-preserved examples of a marsh-estuarine ecosystem. As part of the wetland area, the Smelt Brook Preserve is no different and offers a variety of wildlife, especially birds, and flora very specific to the landscape. A visit to the preserve is most popular along the Riverview Trail with views of the salt marsh, stands of shagbark hickory and oak trees, and the York River. This land was once the location of a generous number of saltwater farms, and evidence is still found by those with a keen eye.
