As home to endangered species such as the Blanding's turtle and the black racer snake, the Walnut Hill Focus Area is considered a statewide location of ecological significance. The focus area has four main parts, one of which is known as the Walnut Hill Preserve, or Walnut Hill 1. Totaling 73.5 acres, the preserve is a mix of upland habitat, where the snakes live, and wetland areas, for their Blanding's turtle reptilian counterparts.
