A 10.6-mile strenuous out-and-back hike via the Hunt Trail. Mount Katahdin will continuously pop up in just about any Maine guide book due to its popularity. Meaning "The Greatest Mountain," it is the tallest in the state and has seen centuries of use from all cultures. As the centerpiece of Baxter State Park and Maine, Katahdin also has the honor of being the end (or beginning) of the infamous Appalachian Trail. As the last and roughest miles of the well-worn route, visitors here come in all forms. The hike to the summit is no small feat either, be prepared for a day to ascend.
