Grist Mill Park Details
This small park is the perfect place to stop and stretch the legs during a long ride or to enjoy a picnic lunch. Located directly on one of the waterfalls (known as Fist Falls) along the Royal River, it provides an up-close view as the river flows directly into the Yarmouth Harbor and out to Casco Bay. After large storms, the waterfall here can be quite powerful (and loud). The picnic area is located on the former site of a grist mill and sawmill, which are honored at the nearby Grendall Memorial. During April each year when it starts to get dark the parking lot will fill with commercial fishermen trucks - that's a sign the elver fishing season has begun. Elvers fish for American eels and Maine is the only state in the U.S. that has a significant fishery for them. These eels are a big deal for Asian resturants and can go for upwards of $2,800 a pound.
