Owascoag was the original name of the now popular town of Scarborough. Meaning "land of much grass," the title originates from the miles of salt marshlands that cover the property. The 52 acres of the Scarborough River Wildlife Sanctuary are a testament to the early use of the area for farming and its extensive wetland habitat. With one and a half-miles of easy to moderate trails, visitors will get glimpses of the marshy woods, pools, and Scarborough River on a land that was most recently used as a golf course.
