Known as the nation's most easterly port and located at the entrance to Cobscook Bay, Moose Island is part of an 87-acre protected wild area, Shackford Head State Park. Originally owned by one of the earliest inhabitants here, a soldier in the revolutionary war, the land has historical significance that a walk along one of the hiking trails provides a glimpse of. Besides being an important ship port throughout time, five civil warships were also burned here for salvage in the 1900s. A plaque still demarks their memory to this day.
