At only 40 miles long, the Acadia All-American Road Scenic Byway is one of the most visited in Maine. Starting in the popular Bar Harbor, the route takes visitors for an interesting twist when it crosses the bridge to explore the infamous Mount Desert Island. Settled since before colonial times, the 108 square mile island is now home to four distinct townships and several interesting cultural points and stoops. Visitors can either come to tackle the views of the extremely rocky landscape carved by glaciers, or to enjoy a day or two in a traditional town on the east coast. For those looking to avoid traffic, the free Island Explorer bus network departs daily.
