Baxter State Park Details
Bordering the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in Maine's North Central Woods, and home to the tallest peak in the state, Baxter State Park is a land trust first created by a governor with a "magnificent obsession" to preserve Maine's land. Now almost a century later, the park is over 200,000 acres of unpaved wilderness open to visitors mainly for camping and hiking, though snowmobiling and boating are permitted in designated areas. Approximately 25% of the park is open to hunting and trapping, except moose, in the spirit of keeping it "natural" though the park limits camping days and visitors.
