Old Harbor Life-Saving Station Details
Established in 1897 by the U.S. Life-Saving Service -- which later became the U.S. Coast Guard -- the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station helped rescue shipwrecked sailors for almost 50 years before being decommissioned in 1944. Thirteen such stations, specialty-built to quickly launch rescue boats, once operated on Cape Cod; the one in Provincetown was moved here from Chatham to escape erosion in the 1970s. The Old Harbor station features exhibits on life-saving history. The building is open seasonally for open house programs, in addition to the rescue drill reenactment on Thursday nights in July and August.
