West Rim Trail Details
The 14-mile trail along the west rim of Zion Canyon starts at the Grotto and runs through Refrigerator Canyon and up the canyon wall via Walter's Wiggles. This section of 21 switchbacks is named in honor of an early park superintendent, who helped engineer the trail so that horses could climb. The paved trail ends at the broad, sandy area at the top of the Wiggles called Scout Overlook. This Zion Canyon viewpoint is also where the West Rim Trail splits from the Angels Landing Trail. The West Rim Trail continues to Lava Point, gaining 3,200 feet of elevation along the way. That's why most hikers start at Lava Point and climb down into the canyon, not the other way around.
