Learn About the Park
Zion's animal population includes 68 species of mammals, 36 types of reptiles, 7 amphibian species, and 271 types of birds. These animals occupy a variety of habitats within the park, from canyons and river bottoms to high desert plateaus and forests. The mule deer is Zion's largest resident mammal and the animal you're most likely to encounter during your visit. Mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, and grey fox also live here but are rarely seen. Desert areas are home to chuckwalla and whiptail lizards as well as geckos, king snakes, and rattlers. Peregrine falcons and golden eagles are among the birds that live or breed in Zion.
