Cape Cod Rail Trail Details
The 22-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail is one of the best -- and most popular -- bike trails in the U.S. The trail follows the path of the former Old Colony Railroad, so it runs mostly flat and straight. Smooth pavement makes it an excellent trail for bikers and inline skaters alike. The Rail Trail stretches from Route 134 in Dennis in the mid-Cape to Wellfleet in the heart of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Along the way you'll pass through six different Cape towns, with ample opportunities to detour and explore. Highlights include a segment that runs through Nickerson State Park, abundant natural vistas of cranberry bogs, open water, marshes, and waldlife, and a connection to the Old Colony Rail Trail, which runs 4-1/2 miles from Harwich to Chatham. You can also link up with the Nauset Bike Trail at the National Seashore's Salt Pond Visitor Center, stop at the park's main headquarters to check out the Marconi Station, or just hit the beach at LeCount Hollow when you reach the end of the path at the Wellfleet Trailhead.
