Yellowstone is one of the richest temperate ecosystem in the world and full of iconic American wildlife, including bison, elk and moose, black and grizzly bears, bighorn sheep, antelope-like pronghorns, coyotes and wolves. There are 61 species of mammals altogether in the park. Bison have ranged freely in Yellowstone since prehistoric times, while wolves were successfully reintroduced to the park in 1995. Black bears are more common, but the park is also home to more than 500 grizzly bears. Ospreys, bald eagles, and peregrine falcons nearly vanished from the park but are now abundant again. Yellowstone's native inhabitants also include 13 species of fish, six reptiles, and 4 amphibians.
