Bog House Details

The Cranberry Bog House was part of an operation to cultivate cranberries for juice and sauce. Wild cranberries have grown in the Pamet Valley for thousands of years, and still can be found near the Province Lands Visitors Center. At the bog house you can see the holding pond and irrigation ditch that farmer James Howe used to flood the bogs and raise his cranberry crop, which was once so valuable that it was known as "red gold." The circa 1830 bog house was in operation from the 1880s until the 1960s.
