Pirate Ship Whydah Details

The *Whydah*, named after a North African slave port and originally a slave ship, was captured by the pirate Black Sam Bellamy in the Caribbean in 1717. Bellamy made the 18-gun galley his flagship and used it to raid shipping up along the East Coast as he headed for Maine. However, on April 26, 1717, Bellamy steered the *Whydah* too close to Cape Cod, and a storm drove her onto the shoals at Wellfleet, where the ship overturned and Bellamy and most of his crew drowned. A treasure trove of gold, silver and jewelry went down with the ship and was recovered in 1984. You can see some of the booty at the Expedition Whydah Sea-Lab & Learning Center in Provincetown. The museum is open mid-May to the end of October.
