Outermost House Details
Naturalist Henry Beston wrote *The Outermost House*, his account of a year spent on Cape Cod, during a stay at the Fo'castle, a beach cottage atop a sand dune in Eastham. Beston's book helped raise public awareness about the wild beauty of the Outer Cape and set the stage for the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore. The cottage, located two miles south of the Old Coast Guard Station, became known as the Outermost House after the book was published in 1928. Designated a National Literary Landmark, the Outermost House was swept out to sea by a hurricane in 1978. Visitors can see similar homes still standing, however, and a campaign is underway to rebuild Beston's house near its original site.
