Look for a bare patch on the side of Mt. LeConte -- this is a scar left by a massive landslide that occurred in 1951. Rock slides are quite common in the Smokies because of the abundant rainfall in the mountains and the prevalence of unstable Anakeesta rock, a type of slate that's high in iron sulfide.
