Tonto Trail Details
One of the longest continuous trails in the Grand Canyon, the Tonto Trail travels from Red Canyon to Elves Chasm and the Royal Arch. Stories about the trail's origin vary, but most seem to believe it was built by Native Americans to cross Tonto Platform, the area the separates the inner gorge from the upper canyon. While the trail isn't terribly challenging, some parts are more difficult than others, mostly due to varying trail conditions. There are a number of junctions with other trails, as well as water sources, and the trail is great when combined with others to make a shorter loop. Unless it is absolutely necessary, hikers are urged to avoid water from Horn Creek.
