Santa Maria Spring Details
Although this trail -- cut by the Santa Fe Railroad just after the turn of the 20th century -- has technically been abandoned for over 70 years, it remains in decent shape, probably from hikers trying to access the spring. The rough, secluded trail descends through white sandstone just above Hermit Creek, and reaches a rest house located near the shady spring. Despite the fact that here are great viewpoints over Hermit Canyon along the trail, it remains seldom traveled, and is a great trail for hikers looking to get off the beaten path. Water is generally available from the spring, however, it must be filtered or treated.
