Levens Hall Details
Levens Hall was built around a 13th Century pele tower, which was expanded and rebuilt towards the end of the 16th Century. It is the family home of the Bagots, and contains a collection of Jacobean furniture, fine paintings, the earliest English patchwork and many other beautiful objects. The world-famous award winning gardens were laid out in 1694. The topiary, beech hedges and colourful seasonal beds create a stunning visual impact. The topiary garden has huge abstract shapes, pyramids and columns reminiscent of monstrous chess men. They rise up from a spectacular seasonal under-planting populated with an ever-changing range of over thirty thousand flowers. Further on, beyond a romantic old orchard and separated by the great beech hedges, lie the magnificent herbaceous borders. These are traditionally double in format and are said to be amongst the finest to be found in England. There are also wall borders, vegetable and herb gardens, a rose garden, fountain garden, fine lawns, wildflower meadows, a willow labyrinth and much, much more. You will be led on along vistas and through hedged archways to find yourself in new areas...Quiet spaces, intimate hidden corners to sit and contemplate or magnificent set piece displays. There's fun too to be had in working your way into the wild willow maze, and yet more finding your way out again! Homemade lunches and teas are prepared daily in the house kitchens. Beverages include fresh ground coffee, wine, and the Levens beer "Morocco Ale" brewed to a secret recipe. Open between April and October.
