Biking is permitted throughout Acadia, but your experience can vary widely. The Park Loop Road is scenic but also narrow and twisting, and is frequently congested with vehicle traffic. Cadillac Mountain Road is steep and can be dangerous. The park's 45 miles of carriage roads are the most popular with bikers -- they are free from vehicle traffic, well-graded, and covered with a crushed-rock surface. Road bikes can be used on the paved roads of Acadia, but mountain bikes are recommended for the carriage roads. Bikes are not permitted on hiking trails. Bikers need to yield to horses and should avoid sudden stops on gravel roads.
