Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station Details
Because of its high elevation (2,283 meters, or 7,490 feet), the Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station was considered to be one of the most important sites used during the International Geophysical Year (IGY), an 18-month period from July 1957 through December 1958. The IGY was an expansion of the International Polar Years, which had been conducted in 1882-83 and 1932-33; the International Council of Scientific Unions endured the expansion to research fields beyond the polar regions. Over the course of IGY, more than 30,000 scientists and observers from 70 countries participated, and half-way through IGY, it was determined that the program would continue for another 12 months into 1959 to open up new areas of geophysical research, including the ocean and upper atmosphere. When the station was build in the late-1950s, it was approximately 50 square meters (538 square feet), and was built out of sight of the Town of Banff and the Banff Springs Hotel. The station was expanded in 1961, and operational until 1978; the building was removed in 1981, and today only the station's foundation remains. The Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station was designated a national historic site because of its contribution to the International Geophysical Year of 1957-58.
