Abbot Pass Refuge Cabin Details
In the late-1800s, the Canadian Pacific Railway began promoting tourism in the Canadian Rockies, and realized that mountain climbers were a perfect audience. In 1899, the railway brought in Swiss mountain guides to lead amateur climbers up the mountains, safely of course. Two of those guides, Edouard Feuz, Sr. and Rudolph Aemmer, initially sketched plans for the Abbot Pass Refuge Cabin and began building it soon thereafter. The cabin would be ideally situated between Yoho and Banff National Parks, and Abbot Pass is accessible from Lake Louise as well. Construction of the cabin took awhile, as all materials had to be hauled by horseback across the Victoria Glacier, and then on the guides' backs to the build site.More than two tons of materials were brought in for the build, based on local building methods and Swiss design. In 1922, construction was completed at an altitude of 2,925 meters (9,598 feet), and the cabin served as a base camp for those attempting to climb Mt. Lefroy and Mt. Victoria. Today, the Abbot Pass Refuge Cabin (now known as the Abbot Pass Hut) is managed by the Alpine Club of Canada and is one of 24 high alpine huts in use, and is a National Historic Site of Canada. Both Abbot Pass and the Abbot Pass Hut are named after Phillip Stanly Abbot, the first mountaineering fatality in North America; he fell to his death in 1896 whilst attempting to make the first ascent of Mt. Lefroy.
