Bow Summit and Peyto Lake Details

The highest point along the Icefields Parkway is Bow Summit. At 6,800 feet above sea level, Bow Summit is the highest point found along the Icefields Parkway, from Banff to Jasper. Not only that, but it's the highest point crossed by a public road in all of Canada. Just over the summit is Peyto Lake, set into a deep glacial valley far below. A paved trail departs from the parkway and takes you to a terrific viewing point of Peyto Lake, and an extension trail (very infrequently traveled) takes you a bit further for additional views of the glacier that feeds Peyto Lake. The lake was named for "Wild Bill" Peyto, an early outfitter.
