You'll likely meet a Hardwick sheep or two on this walk from the head of Coniston Water to the shores of Tarn Hows, following a trail developed more than a century ago by a local estate owner. The walk begins at the Monk Coniston parking lot and shortly enters the grounds of Monk Coniston, a Gothic estate once owned by Beatrix Potter. You'll stroll through the estate's walled gardens before entering the woods, following the signs to Tarn Hows, a manmade lake ringed by trees planted by landowner James Garth Marshall in the 19th century. You'll have nice views of Coniston Water as you descend from Tarn Hows, passing a cottage of the same name and Boon Crag Farm before returning the the shores of Coniston Water and, shortly, the parking area where you started.
