Castlerigg Stone Circle Details

Among the earliest British stone circles, Castlerigg dates to about 3,000 BC during the Neolithic period, and it's certainly one of the most dramatic, with panoramic views of the Thirlmere Valley and the mountains of Helvellyn and High Seat serving as a backdrop. Of the more than 300 stone circles in Britain, most of them date to the Bronze Age and contain burial monuments; the Neolithic stone circles, such as Castlerigg, do not. The main circle is about 100 feet in diameter and features 38 large stones, some standing 10 feet high. The entrance seems to line up with the midwinter sunset. It's been protected since 1883, and is managed by the National Trust and English Heritage, and while admission is free, the site does see a lot of visitors, so take care not to disturb the area. Castlerigg is 1.6 miles southeast of Keswick off the A591 road, and there is some parking near the site.
