Fees and Reservations

The Lake District is unlike many National Parks across the world, which are state-owned and often charge a fee for an entry permit. There is no fee to enter the Lake District National Park; it is a living, working landscape with a resident population of 41,000 but most property is privately owned. Many of the National Park Authority's events and guided walks are free, however, although some are charged. Individual activity vendors will normally charge entrance fees or activity fees for their specific events, activities or attractions. Most points of interest and historical sites and monuments in the National Park can also be visited free of charge or seen from nearby roads, public footpaths and bridlepaths. For camping in tents and campervans and caravanning fees are charged by the privately owned campsites and caravan parks; these fees vary but tend to be between £21 and £25 per night. Wild camping - what is sometimes called backcountry camping - carries no fee but campers are expected to be responsible for leaving no trace.
