Boating

The Kobuk River is an ideal way to view the park, whether by paddling or by motorized boat. Of the 350-mile Kobuk River, 61 miles pass through the park. The Kobuk is a slow-moving, low gradient river perfect for collapsible canoes, kayaks, and small rafts. Most boaters opt to fly in using a commercial transporter and then float down to one of the major towns. For a rough estimate on timing, most boaters take 5-7 days to get from Ambler to Kiana. Other than the Kobuk River, the Salmon River is another option for boating, it travels 70 miles through the park from the Baird Mountains. Expedition paddling experience is highly recommended before setting off in the park, however if you prefer, guided boat trips may be arranged by commercial outfitters in Kotzebue.
