Backcountry Information

All park land is considered backcountry, visitors should prepare and learn about visiting the backcountry in advance. Backcountry permits are not required for visiting the park, however it is highly recommended to complete an optional backcountry itinerary with park rangers at the visitor center before beginning. Bear Resistant Food Containers (BRFC) are available for overnight backpacking trips, there are not always trees suitable for a bear hang in the park. Fires are allowed in the backcountry, though much of the backcountry is above treeline so a backpacking stove is more logical for cooking. All drinking water collected in the park should be purified before drinking. It is highly recommended to speak with a park ranger before heading into the backcountry.
