Amygdaloid Details

Amygdaloid Island is named because the shape of the pink agates found were almond-shaped (amygdaloidal). This amazing island is only 0.25 miles wide and 3.8 miles long, making it easy to explore the entire thing in a short amount of time. It is a beautiful area that wasn't heavily explored by humans until the 1990s when kayaking became a more popular means of transportation, because it can only be accessed by water, around the park. However, the waters leading to it can be difficult, so beginning kayakers are discouraged from making this their first trip into Lake Superior. Amygdaloid Island is located just off the northeastern shore of Isle Royale.
