Some say this 26-mile hike is the most challenging in all the park. Hikers journey from the McCargoe Cove Campground toward Windigo, traveling up-and-down on uneven surfaces. You'll descend into marshes, walk along rocky ridges and climb up a path that runs through a pine forest. Eventually, the forest opens, providing a magnificent view of Pie Island. For much of the trail you'll be hiking from rock cairn to rock cairn with not much else in the way of posted directions. If you end up getting lost, which you might, simply backtrack to the last cairn and carry on from there.
