Wiseman Details

Wiseman is a resident zone community that exists outside park boundaries. It, along with nine other resident zone communities, relies on the park's resources for basic needs such as food. U.S. Forest Service forester, Bob Marshall, first visited this isolated mining camp shortly after he arrived in Alaska in 1929. He lived in Wiseman during three periods in the 1930s, eventually publishing a study of daily life in 1933. This publication touted Wiseman as a arctic utopia. Marshall's writings served as inspiration for future park preservation efforts.
