Living with the Land

For thousands of years, Alaskans have relied on fish, wildlife and other wild resources for food, shelter, clothing, transportation and more. Congress passed the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act in 1980 to protect these important subsistence resources for residents of the state. Today, locals participate in preserving traditions by using park resources as the native eskimos and indians did. Subsistence activities occur year round here and include seasonal and cyclical hunting, fishing, trapping and gathering.
