Though you may think otherwise, the Gunnison River is unraftable due to the extremely technical nature of its rapids and a high number of difficult portages. Sorry. (You can raft the Gunnison at the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area, to the west of the park.) That said, expert kayakers find the Gunnison River both accessible and challenging. Rapids in the park are Class V and some sections are even more fierce, earning an "unrunnable" rating. The river itself is technical and several of the portages are dangerous in their own right, so paddle at your own risk. The National Park Service makes a point to say, "The Gunnison River through the National Park has claimed the lives of even the most experienced, respected kayakers," so use caution. Bear in mind that many local kayakers feel the structure and hydraulic action of the Gunnison River create a situation where typical water flow ratings are inapplicable. Add to that the cold water -- the river temperature is usually 50 degrees or less -- and you have a tough river to paddle. Permits are required, but are free.
