Camping

There are no established campgrounds at the park. Instead, the park is divided into regions, each with a smattering of individual campsites scattered throughout. The front-country regions are: Rainy Lake East, Rainy Lake West, Kabetogama Lake, Namakan Lake, Sand Point Lake and Crane Lake. The backcountry is considered to be the Kabetogama Peninsula, a large chunk of land between Kabetogama Lake and Rainy Lake. There are a series of inland lakes on this peninsula, and all backcountry site are centered around these lakes. Front -country sites have a tent platform, bear-proof food storage locker, vault toilets and fire pits. Backcountry sites do not have a bear-proof food storage locker or vault toilets. All campsites require a reservation. You must make your reservation a minimum of one day before your intended trip. With your reservation, you'll receive a permit, which you are required to print out and bring with you to your site. Small sites fit a maximum of 9 people and cost $16, with an added $2 fee for one tent pad and $4 fee for two tent pads. Large sites accommodate a maximum of 18 people and cost $24 per night. Group sites fit 30 people (14 people minimum) and cost $35 per night. Backcountry sites also cost $16 per night. In addition to the nightly fee, you'll be charged a one-time reservation fee of $10. If you choose to rent a canoe or kayak overnight with your campsite, you'll pay an additional $28 per night. Day use boat rentals are $12 per day. In the off-season (September through May) sites are free. Reservation fee still applies. The maximum length of stay at front country sites is 14 days, and the maximum length of stay at backcountry sites is 7 days. All of the campsites in the park are accessed by boat only. If you are traveling by car or RV and do not want to rent a boat, you can camp at one of several car-accessible campsites in nearby towns, such as the Ash River Campground and the Woodenfrog State Forest Campground.
